VolSpike · Volume Spike Detector

See the bars where volume really explodes.

Most volume is just noise. VolSpike ignores the routine churn and marks only the bars where activity really jumps. So when the tape suddenly gets loud, you're already looking at it.

A simple lens for unusual activity.

VolSpike won't tell you where price is going. Nothing can. What it does is simpler and more useful: it marks the bars where activity clearly breaks from what's been normal. That's often where the big players lean in, where stops get flushed, where a move either ignites or dies loudly. I want my eyes on those bars, not the hundred quiet ones around them.

Stay out of fake drama

Skip the spikes on tiny dojis and noisy open bars that usually go nowhere.

Use as a building block

Feed spikes into your alerts, filters or strategy triggers as a building block.

Spikes that stand out for the right reasons

VolSpike is always comparing what's happening right now against what's been normal for your market lately. A bar only gets flagged when its activity clearly pushes above that backdrop, not because it's a busy open or some random news wiggle. What you end up with is a handful of markers that actually mean something, instead of a chart that lights up all day and trains you to ignore it.

Different spikes for different times of day

A “big” bar before the cash open is not the same animal as a “big” bar in the middle of RTH. VolSpike can treat pre-session and regular hours as separate worlds, so you're not buried in markers when volume is naturally high, or left with nothing when it's thin. You set what “significant” means for each session, and the indicator follows that rhythm.

From “too many” to “just right” in a few clicks

Tuning VolSpike is meant to be quick, not a research project. You control how strict a spike has to be and how fast it reacts. Start from a preset, then nudge sensitivity up or down until the chart shows exactly as much as you can actually act on, and no more. Once it's dialed in, those spikes turn into a dependable building block: for trade ideas, alerts, or a filter inside your own strategy logic.

VOLSPIKE FAQ

When a spike actually counts

The questions traders actually ask me before they'll let a volume tool sit in front of their own decisions.

Looking at the biggest bar in hindsight is easy, reacting in real time is the hard part. VolSpike keeps a running sense of what is normal and flags bars as they form when they break that pattern. You see the spike while it matters, not ten bars later when the move is already over.

The tool is intentionally built to avoid that. You can require a minimum body size, limit markers to one per bar, and tighten the spike definition until only the truly standout bars remain. Most traders settle on a setting where spikes are rare enough to be interesting, but frequent enough to keep them engaged with the flow.

Yes. The underlying logic adapts to the volatility and rhythm of the instrument you apply it to. You might run tighter settings on fast futures and more relaxed ones on slower markets, but the idea is always the same: highlight the bars where participation suddenly jumps compared to what was happening before.

VolSpike is the “loudness detector” in the Flow42 family. Use it on its own as a visual aid, or let VolDrive read it directly. VolDrive can suppress its own arrows on VolSpike bars, so its continuation signals steer clear of the bars where the tape just went wild. It also feeds cleanly into your own alerts and strategy filters.

The Flow.42 way

Trade less. Trade better. Trade with clarity.

A spike means someone committed. I want to know the moment it happens, not after.
