ChopState · Market Regime Map

Stop trading in chop. Trade the clean phases.

Think of it as a traffic light for the chart. Red: price is grinding in messy overlap, the odds are bad. Green: the market is clean enough to be worth your risk. Use it to gate your trend trades, your breakouts, and the rest of your Flow.42 tools.

A regime engine for chop and trend.

Every trade I take comes down to one question: press, or wait? ChopState answers it right on the chart. It boxes the messy, overlapping zones where I used to get chopped to pieces, and gets out of the way when the market is actually moving. Box on screen? I sit on my hands. Clean? I trust my setups again. It won't call the next tick. It tells you whether to even be in the fight.

Trade mode and protect mode

The market can do anything, so your first decision is whether to trade, well before you settle on what to trade. ChopState is the filter I never had: when to step on it, and when the smart move is to do nothing at all.

Trade mode

The market is clean. Trend and breakout ideas have room to work.

Protect mode

Overlap and chop. ChopState marks the grind so you stop donating trades to noise.

Trading Involves Risk. Flow42 Trading Software is built to reduce unnecessary exposure and support disciplined decisions.

Stop trading in chop

The boxes make it obvious when the odds are stacked against you, so you skip the trades that were never going to work.

See where trend is worth it

Clean, trend-friendly stretches stand out. That's where I actually want to be pressing, not stuck in the grind.

Regime filter for your tools

Gate VolDrive or your own BloodHound/BlackBird strategies with it, and let it pull them out of the fight when conditions go bad.

Know when the market is just spinning

When the market is just spinning its wheels, it flags a clear CHOP regime: a plain warning that anything you enter here is more likely to get flipped, faded or stopped by noise than carried by a real move. That one flag has saved me more than any entry signal ever has.

See when chop has truly ended

Not every tick outside the range is a breakout. Most are traps. ChopState waits: price has to move and hold outside the box before it calls the chop done. So you stop reacting to the first fake push or stop-run, and start trading the expansion that's actually real.

Tune it to your market and personality

Some traders want to see every hint of chop; others only care about the big, obvious boxes. Neither is wrong; it's how you trade. So ChopState lets you dial overlap tolerance, trend thresholds and box length anywhere from twitchy to patient. Tune it once, and it becomes your filter, not a generic one.

ChopTrimmer: Dial in your breakout behavior

Settings shouldn't feel like homework. One dial matches ChopState’s breakout behavior to your market, timeframe and style: start from a proven preset, trim toward Sensitive, Balanced or Stable until the boxes feel right, and copy the exact values into ChopState in seconds.

CHOPSTATE FAQ

Before you trust the boxes

Honest answers to how and when to use ChopState, and where it actually helps your stats and your patience.

Most damage to a trading account comes from trading when the market is not ready, whether that’s a tired trend, a sideways grind, or a fake breakout. ChopState makes that regime explicit by marking congestion and trend-friendly phases directly on the chart. You don’t have to “feel” if it’s choppy; you see it and can decide to stand down or switch to a different playbook.

ADX and simple volatility filters only look at trend strength in one dimension. ChopState reads the market on more than one axis and turns that into a clear regime, painted right on your bars. Instead of only reporting that trend is low, it shows you exactly where the market is churning and where breakouts have a higher chance of actually following through.

By default, ChopState is tuned to remove the worst environments, the ones that hurt your patience and statistics the most. If it feels too strict, you can soften the thresholds so that boxes only mark the most obvious congestion zones. The goal is not to avoid every imperfect trade, but to clearly mark the areas where your edge historically collapses.

In the Flow42 suite, ChopState acts as a regime filter. VolDrive has a built-in ChopState filter, and through ChopState's exposed regime output you can also gate your own BloodHound/BlackBird strategies to only act when price is in a favorable, non-chop state. That way, your best continuation signals are not wasted inside messy ranges where they statistically perform worst.

The Flow.42 way

Trade less. Trade better. Trade with clarity.

Half of trading well is knowing when not to. This tells me when the chart is just noise.
