INTERACTIVE · VOLATILITY DIAL

Flow42 ChopTrimmer

Pick your market and volatility. Then turn one dial towards Sensitive, Balanced, or Stable to get clean starting values for range-break detection.

What the dial controls

ChopState marks candles as “chop” (gray) when price is ranging. When volatility rises, wicks and stop-runs can kick price outside the box even though the range is still real. This dial helps you tune the breakout behavior with simple presets.

  • Breakout Lookback = how many bars define the range box.
  • Big Bar Factor = how strict breakout confirmation is (higher = stricter).
  • Breakout Hold Bars = how long we stay “out of chop” after a break.
  • Box Edge Buffer = extra space around the box to ignore wick noise (ticks).

Simple rule

If the range does not stay gray, increase Box Edge Buffer first. If a fake breakout keeps you out of chop too long, reduce Hold Bars.

Dial mapping rule (easy to implement)

We start from the Balanced preset (per market & volatility) and apply small shifts:

Sensitive
Lookback − 2
BigBar − 0.15
HoldBars + 1
EdgeBuffer − 2 ticks

More reactive. Earlier breakouts, but can flip more.

Stable
Lookback + 2
BigBar + 0.15
HoldBars − 1
EdgeBuffer + 2 ticks

Range-friendly. Fewer wick breaks, faster return after fakeouts.

Note: Big Body Factor is kept at 1.00 (recommended default).

Volatility is the best real-world switch. Use the dial to trim “more breakouts” vs “more stable gray ranges”.

Balanced
Sensitive Balanced Stable

Balanced: a clean default for this volatility regime.

Tip: High volatility + lots of wicks → start at Balanced, then move one step toward Stable.

Big Body Factor: 1.00 (fixed). Focus on Lookback + BigBar + HoldBars + EdgeBuffer.
